Despite being home to the Great Plains, South Dakota does have some reasonably lofty mountains. They may be known as the Black Hills, but at 2,200 metres (7,242 feet) above sea level they're not only equal in height to the pointiest bits in Australia, but taller than anything else in the US east of the Rockies.
There are a handful of downhill ski resorts in South Dakota. Terry Peak has the most terrain - 30 runs across 450 skiiable acres and a 340 metre (1,110 feet) vertical. Deer Mountain has 44 runs across an area about half the size, with slightly less steep. For freestylers and horizontal bombers, Great Bear Recreation Park has a terrain park and a tubing park, as well as a dozen or so runs.
There's some decent cross country skiing in South Dakota too, in many of the state parks, as well as nearly 500 kms of snowmobile trails in the Black Hills.
