Remarks Mini Shred Event For Young Riders And Skiers (02-Jul-08)

The Remarkables, NZ, July 2, 2008 - The first competition of the season for young freestyle snowboarders and skiers

The first competition of the season for young freestyle snowboarders and skiers is to be held in the Up & Go Terrain Park at The Remarkables on Tuesday 8 July.

The first round of the Parklife Youth Mini Shred competition is open to freestylers of all abilities aged 16 years and under - the second round takes place at Mt Hutt on 12 July and round three is back at The Remarkables on 21 September.

Josh Clark, Youth Action Sports Co-ordinator at The Remarkables says he always looks forward to this fun and chilled event at the start of the season.

“The Parklife Youth Mini Shred has grown over the years to be one of the most popular events on the freestyling calendar. It’s great because it gives kids the chance to show their stuff in a mellow competition designed just for them.”

“The Up & Go Terrain Park provides an awesome environment where the kids can push their boundaries a little, get inspired by others and have a great day.”

Mr Clark said competitors were also offered the opportunity to be coached by members or the Parklife Rider Team and other top snow sports instructors after the event.

“The kids will get to hang out with members of the Parklife Rider Team in the Park and receive help with whatever they feel they want to work on - this is a wicked opportunity for these youngsters to learn some tricks from the best,” said Mr Clark.

Spectators and participants will also be able to check out the style of members of the Parklife Rider Team as they demonstrate their moves in the park throughout the morning.

For those entering Tuesday’s competition, plenty of spot prizes are up for grabs from K2, Alta Snowboard Shop and Parklife. Registration is free and there is a $20 refundable bib deposit. Competitors only need to turn up on the day and register at Guest Services in the base building between 9:00am and10:00am to secure their slot in the competition. Helmets are compulsory.

Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence says The Remarkables is a fantastic place to learn lifelong snow skills and is home to a series of awesome progression programmes.

“At The Remarkables we are very keen to see young people take up freestyle skiing and riding and are excited about providing the facilities, events and programmes that encourage their progression.  These kids are learning fantastic skills which will serve them well into adulthood and foster a relationship with our alpine environment.”
