The Dachstein glacier in southern Austria has re-opened for summer skiing this weekend, two weeks later than planned. A technical issue following the replacement of the steel cable, for the first time since the lift was installed in 1969, on the Dachstein access cable car led to the postponed opening.

St Anton will open on 27th November and the famous Austrian resort has launched a VIP-competition to give entrants the chance to win pole position and carve the first line of the new season with ski legend Karl Schranz.
On the morning of the 27th the lucky winner will ride the Galzigbahn to the top with a glass of champagne and canapés to hand before becoming the first skier to ski the piste and officially open the season to all.

Saalbach is making one of the biggest ever investments in a chairlift this summer to upgrade the Hasenauerköpfl from a quad chair to a state of the art eight seater chairlift with pull down bubble weather-protection covers. The 7m Euro lift will also have heated seats.
The new lift is one of three the resort, one of Austria’s largest and most popular, is installing ahead of winter 2009-10.

Austria’s Dachstein ski area has a 4.90m (over 16 foot) snow depth on its slopes and has decided to extend the ski touring season by two weeks to the 1st May with a daily morning ski tour available at 7.30am.
