The weather conditions at Panorama are just right – cold and dry, which means that snowmaking for the 2008/09 winter season is underway ahead of schedule. 

Panorama is able to make snow on 40% of its vast terrain and this morning the system is working at capacity on Showoff and Old Timer, pumping out the white-stuff, which in some places is already one-metre deep.

Mt Hutt’s scheduled closing date is Sunday 19 October, but the high country ski area will reopen for four days over Labour Weekend, from Friday 24 October to Monday 27 October.

Mt Hutt Manager Dave Wilson said the snow conditions at Mt Hutt were in great shape.

“We’ve had a fantastic season and are delighted to be able to reopen for a final fling,” he said. “It’s a fantastic way to end the season in the high country.” <

Mt Hutt, NZ, October 8, 2008 - A record number of people

A record number of people (250) competed under blue skies in Mt Hutt’s 10th annual Peak to Pub race on Sunday (2 October 2008).

The Peak to Pub began with a 100m dash to strap on skis or snowboards before racing down the slopes of Mt Hutt. This was followed by an 18km mountain bike dash down the ski area’s access road before an 11km run finishing outside the Blue Pub in Methven.
