Squaw Valley USA is currently sitting on one of the deepest snow bases in North America with over four metres (13 feet) of snow lying on upper slopes following huge snowfalls in late February and early March. The current season snowfall total is 398 inches - with 80 inches falling in the first week of March alone.

Squaw has now launched its traditional annual Spring Pass for only $179.

The "Legambiente" organisation in Italy has determined that the ski resort of Selva Gardena is the most environmentally friendly community in the country.

In the Italian weekly magazine “Panorama” the organisation notes that the sources of renewable energy in Italy are increasing and that Selva Gardena is in first place with an average of one square metre of solar panel coverage per habitant.

NZ Ski, March 10, 2009 - A new 89 litre snowmaking reservoir

A new 89 million litre snowmaking reservoir in the Sarah Sue area at Coronet Peak will significantly improve the ski area’s ability to produce “a lot more snow”, according to Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie.

“The reservoir will improve water stocks to enable better use of the fully automated snowmaking system across the entire mountain,” he said.

The latest dumps, which are predicted to last all week, come on top of weeks of snowfalls which have left the resort with depths of more than two metres.

8 of 52 lifts at Valmorel ski area in France were operational last week after a strike by lift operators hit the resort for a reported 36 hours.

The lift personnel refused to work whilst demanding better pay and improved conditions for working on Sundays.
