Snowplanet, New Zealand’s only indoor snow centre, is going against the trend of job losses and redundancies by creating 35 new full- and part-time jobs.

The centre has benefited from growing numbers of customers using the -5C indoor ski slope despite the economic slowdown, and wanted to increase its staff to meet demand and improve service.

Ski Casablanca, Belgium, May 4, 2009 - The operational status of the world's oldest

The operational status of the world’s oldest surviving indoor snow centre, Ski Casablanca in Belgium, is currently in doubt.

A notice on the centre’s website says, “The ski centre is closed during the summer for an indefinite period.”

Ski Casablanca was one of the first three in the world to commence operations more than 20 years ago in the late 1980s along with centres in Australia and Japan which have ceased trading.

Mt Hutt, New Zealand, May 4, 2009 - Snow enthusiasts dug out their snow gear

Snow enthusiasts dug out their snow gear and hiked up to the top of Canterbury’s Mt Hutt over the weekend to enjoy ‘first tracks’ of the season.

Snowfall on Thursday and Friday last week and continued cold temperatures has resulted in a 45cm base at the high country ski resort.

James McKenzie, Assistant Ski Area Manager for Mt Hutt, said there were a number of keen skiers making the most of the early snow over the weekend.

The first snow of 2009 has arrived at Perisher! About 5cm of fresh snow has fallen in the Village (which sits at 1,720 metres) overnight transforming the landscape into a wintry paradise and the snow continues to fall.

Temperatures dropped to as low as -5°C allowing the snow to settle and accumulate. The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting scattered snow showers to continue throughout the rest of today and into Monday and Tuesday.
