Red Mountain Resort, Rossland, BC. January 26, 2009 - Canada's premiere big mountain freeski event concluded

Canada's premiere big mountain freeski event concluded with a spectacular show on Saturday Jan. 17th with the Open Finals on Red Mountain Resort's Mount Roberts. The warm sunny weather attracted hundreds of spectators to witness Rossland's Dane Tudor defend his Men's title and Fernie's Janina Kuzma win the Ladie's title.

The competition followed the International Free Skiers Association's (IFSA) Big Mountain Freeskiing format.

Wanaka freeskier Byron Wells has matched his brother Jossi’s record as the youngest athlete ever invited to the Winter X Games.

Following a successful 2008 Southern Hemisphere campaign and a strong start to the 2008-2009 Northern Hemisphere season, Byron, 16, was given the nod this week by X-Games officials in North America.

Jossi, 18, was the first Kiwi invited to the competition, and last year he made it pay off, winning a silver medal in the slopestyl

The Winter Olympics may be another two years away but for snowboard enthusiasts Korea will be the place to be from 14-24 January for the fun and excitement of the 2009 FIS Snowboard World Championships.

It will be the first time for the championships to be held in an Asian country and for Korea it will be one of the largest winter sporting events ever held in the country attracting over 1,200 participants from fifty countries.

New Zealand’s top snowboarders and freeskiers got off to a flying start in the northern hemisphere this weekend, posting two top-10 results, including a podium finish by New Zealand’s number one freeskier, Jossi Wells.

Wells finished second in the slopestyle event of the Dew Tour at Breckenridge, Colorado (USA).
