The New Zealand ski season started today when the first ski resort opened. Coronet Peak ski area, near Queenstown in the South Island, opened this morning.

A week of consistent snowfall in New Zealand’s Mt Cook Mackenzie region has created outstanding conditions for the launch of this year’s ski season.
Last Thursday (27 May), Mt Dobson had its biggest single dump of snow since 1986, reporting between 1m to 1.2m in the carpark alone. With a snow base of 130cm, it’s likely the mountain will open earlier than its scheduled 1 July launch date.

Swedish ski mountaineer Fredrik Ericsson has announced he will attempt a complete ski descent of K2 again this summer, a year after his first attempt was curtailed by the death of his partner on the trip, Italian Michele Fait, who fell to his death while skiing down from K2's C2 on the SSE spur.
Ericsson’s latest attempt is the first stage of his dream of becoming the first person to ski the world’s three highest mountains: Mount Everest, K2 and Kangchenj

The Dachstein Glacier in southern Austria has re-opened for snow sports this weekend and unveiled its improved Horsefeathers Superpark for the summer snow season.
The park offers a new three-boxes-line and freestylers can now slide down up to four rails in a line.

Three ski areas on the East and west Coasts of the US have re-opened for snow sports this weekend just for the US national Memorial Day holiday period.

Intrawest, the owners of Canada’s two most popular resorts – Whistler on the West Coast and Tremblant on the East, and formerly 10 other resorts in North America and Europe, has sold another, Mountain Creek in New Jersey.
