New Zealand, October 5, 2009 - Snow has blanketed the central North Island

Snow has blanketed the central North Island, around the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, closing roads, stranding travellers, cutting power and interrupting communications.

Although inconvenient, the snow falls are a huge boost for the spring ski period.
