Plans For West of England Indoor Snow Centre Announced (15-May-11)

Work on the UK’s seventh and the UK’s longest-yet indoor

Work on the UK’s seventh and the UK’s longest-yet indoor snow slope will commence by the end of the year if its backers get a smooth ride.

A public consultation and exhibition of plans for the slope, proposed for a former RAF base near Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset in the West of England took place this week.

As well as the UK’s longest indoor snow slope, at 210m, the complex named Leisuredome, would also include the country’s high

There have been some good pre-season snowfalls....

There have been some good pre-season snowfalls in Australia.

The country’s largest resort, Perisher's snowmaking guns were fired up for the first time this season overnight on May 11th.

However it was Mother Nature who stole the show with 15cm of fresh snow blanketing Perisher’s slopes so far and the resort says it continues to come down.

The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) in the USA has announced that the country’s ski resorts posted their best ever snowfall figures, since records began, and that skier visit numbers were at their second highest ever levels – returning to pre-Economic-downturn levels and passing 60 million for only the second ever time.

French Ski Areas Announce Summer Opening (15-May-11)

All of the ski areas in France are currently closed...

All of the ski areas in France are currently closed, the only major Alpine ski nation to have no skiing available over the next four weeks.

However three glacier ski areas will open in the country next month and in 2011 the opening dates have changed a little so that one opens a little earlier, and one stays open a little later, than in previous years.

First to open, for a five week summer ski season, will be Val d’Isere.

The French-based Compagnie des Alpes groups which owns the majority of major French ski areas as well as some other leading Alpine resorts and a lot of the continent’s theme parks has reported increased sales for the 2010-11 ski season.

“(For) Ski areas (it was) a satisfactory winter season, despite light snowfall and poor skiing
conditions at the end of the season.

A massive 140 million Swiss Franc ($160/£100m) development...

A massive 140 million Swiss Franc ($160/£100m) development installing 18 new ski lifts between two famous Swiss resorts to create one of the country’s and the world’s biggest ski areas has been announced.

The plan to link Andermatt and Sedrun’s skiing will be carried forward by the Scandinavian ski resort developers SkiStar who currently run five of the top resorts in Norway and Sweden, including Are and Hemsedal.

Ski patrol have been out measuring across the resort

UPDATED SNOW LEVELS - Ski patrol have been out measuring across the resort and the average depths are between 15-20cms!

The cold blast crossing the state overnight has brought more snow to Mt Buller with locals waking to a cover of snow this morning.

Between 15-20cms of snow was reported by the Mt Buller Ski Patrol who were out measuring snow depths a month before the snow season official gets underway.

Queenstown’s Coronet Peak and The Remarkables ski areas are launching exciting ski and snowboard programmes as part of a new ‘Performance Centre’.

The Performance Centre is designed to provide ‘skill sessions’ for people who want to ski or ride at a higher level, improve on existing abilities and push boundaries.
