The Midi-Pyrenees (and Toulouse - the area's cultural and geographical centre) has a strong sporting tradition, but it's rugby - not skiing - they live and die for down here. With mild winters and hot summers, the south west corner of France is not an obvious skiing destination. But the Pyrenees, which extend into the Languedoc-Roussillon region, harbour some great resorts and quality terrain.
Best known in this area is probably Barages La Mongie, which is ideal for intermediate skiers and riders. Hardcore park hounds tend to gather at Cauterets, while the seemingly endless green run at Gavarnie Gedre is a favourite with beginners and families. Val d'Azun has the best cross-country in the area.
