Iowa, like its neighbours North and South Dakota, has little in the way of commanding altitude. When you think of Iowa you think of sweeping plains and farm land - not towering mountains. Still, when it snows during the winter months, there are a handful of ski resorts in Iowa that spring into life to fuel the cravings of the Midwest-bound snow lover.
The largest of these is Sundown, with its 21 cedar forest-lined runs. There's a terrain park here (with half pipe) that stays open till midnight - which means you can ease the tension of the daily grind with an evening's riding. Seven Oaks has around half the terrain and is perhaps the more logical choice for families and learners. But with several freestyle trails, snowboarding is popular here too.
