With much of Illinois made up of plains and prairie land, it's not always easy finding higher ground here. The only really 'bumpy' bit is in the far north western corner of the state, above Chicago. On the plus side, winters this far north can be harsh, which means there's normally plenty of snow on the ground.
There are six ski resorts in Illinois, the largest of which - in terms of terrain - is Chestnut Mountain, with over 100 acres of skiable terrain, nine lifts and a 145 metre vertical (475 feet). The other resorts have less than 100 acres between them an average vertical of about 60 metres.
However, if thigh burn's not really your thing anyway, Raging Buffalo has stacks of kickers, rails and jumps, as well as a half pipe - making it hugely popular with snowboarders in Illinois.
