With the city of Gävle only an hour's drive from Stockholm Arlanda airport, the east-coast county of Gävleborg is one of the more accessible regions in Sweden.

 

There are a handful of resorts here, none of which are likely to win best downhill resort any time soon. (Most of them struggle to muster up much more than about 200 metres of vertical.) But there's an awesome array of cross-country here - the resort of Jarvso alone has 800 kms of trails - and with guaranteed snow throughout the winter, that makes Sweden one of the best places for this type of skiing. It's not all planks on the flat. The Kungsberget Ski Centre has a half pipe, a couple of big jumps and a boardercross slope.
