Zermatt Announces Worlds' Biggest Downhill Race (12-Oct-08)

Zermatt, Switzerland, October 12, 2008 - In a challenge to Murren’s long standing Inferno race

In a challenge to Murren’s long standing Inferno race, Zermatt has announced that it will stage the ‘Infinity Race’ which it is dubbing "The World’s Biggest Drop" in December.

Starting from the top of the resort’s lifts at the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Europe’s highest lift-served point at 3800m (12,500ft), racers will descend 2,200 vertical metres via Garten, Furgg and Furi to finish in Zermatt itself at 1600m (5,200ft) after a 10km (6.25 mile) run.

Staged on December 14th, the race highlight’s Zermatt’s world-beating lift-served vertical and season-long snow-surety right at the start of winter.

The race, which will have a Le Mans style start, is open top all and even families can win the event as when a child under the age of 12 takes part, their time is divided by three. Competitors are welcome on skis, snowboard or telemark. Anyone wanting to take part in the race can register online at www.infinity-zermatt.com and a preview of the race course will be available the day before the event, on December 13. Entry is free to lift pass holders.
