Whistler Blackcomb Venue for First Major international Competition Following the IOC Ski HalfPIPE Announcement (10-Apr-11)

World Skiing Invitational Superpipe Event Takes Place During TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival April 15 – 24, 2011

WHISTLER, BC, April 6, 2011 – Whistler Blackcomb will host the first major international ski halfpipe competition following today’s announcement: ski halfpipe will be included in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. The World Skiing Invitational (WSI) takes place Wednesday, April 20 through Sunday, April 24 with the Superpipe finals taking place on Sunday, April 24 as part of the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

“Whistler Blackcomb is incredibly proud to host the first major ski halfpipe competition after this announcement,” says Peter Young, Whistler Blackcomb’s event manager. “The best ski pipe athletes in the world, and future Olympians, will be in Whistler for the WSI, riding Whistler Blackcomb’s new Olympic-sized halfpipe. With such potential in the sport Whistler Blackcomb invested heavily, rebuilding our halfpipe this past summer and purchasing a 22 foot Global Pipe Cutter, the latest technology in transition riding, to be able to offer athletes an Olympic-caliber halfpipe.

Whistler Blackcomb’s new Olympic-sided halfpipe opened in January 2011. The 22 foot Global Pipe Cutter Whistler Blackcomb purchased is the special grooming machine used to contour the halfpipe providing a better surface for athletes. Whistler Blackcomb’s Global Pipe Cutter is currently the only one in North America.

Whistler Blackcomb athletes competing at the World Skiing Invitational include:

  • Sarah Burke, gold medalist X Games 2011, gold medalist European X Games 2011
  • Mike Riddle, gold medalist World Freestyle Championships 2011
  • Roz Groenewoud, gold medalist World Freestyle Championships 2011.
  • Justin Dorey, gold medalist Dew Tour 2011, silver medalist European X Games 2011.

“It is really great that Trennon Paynter’s, Canadian Ski Pipe coach and founder, and the Canadian Ski pipe team will finally get the spotlight and support they deserve as they forge a path towards the top of the podium at the next Olympic Games,” continues Young.

Skiers and riders in Whistler will be able to watch “pipe-side” the best in the world, and future Olympians, compete April 20 through 24.
