What's New For 2008 (14-Apr-08)

FALLS CREEK, VIC, APRIL 14 2008 - Snowmaking Extension - Falls Creek is adding energy-efficient snow producers to its comprehensive network of snowmaking equipment

Snowmaking Extension

Falls Creek is adding energy-efficient snow producers to its comprehensive network of snowmaking equipment.

It is in the process of testing and comparing a variety of new snow
producers now available on the market.

After last year's comparisons between European and North American snow producers Falls Creek has purchased 21 fully automated air water snow makers which require considerable less energy to produce snow.

Owing to the continual improvements being made by snow making manufacturers alpine resort such as Falls Creek will produce more snow more efficiently.

Falls Creek has also purchased a new, fully automated Techno Alpin fan gun to complement its already extensive fleet of 49 fan guns currently used in
winter.

The improved technology being rolled out by the major players in the
snowmaking industry has many advantages. However, two features are particularly beneficial at Falls Creek, they are much quieter than the early versions of today's snow producers and they are a lot more energy efficient.

The continual move towards automation greatly increases the productivity of
the snow producers, strategically placed throughout the alpine resort during
the colder weather periods when snow making 'windows' are maximised.
Last winter, in tandem with the installation of high-tech, energy efficient,
automated snow producers, snow fences were installed. The environmentally-friendly fences proved to be a reliable method of retaining (and enhancing) the natural and man-made snow cover.

The alpine resort is embracing the quest to be an environmentally responsible entity and is contributing to the global quest to reduce the impact on Mother Nature by dramatically reducing the amount of energy while producing more snow,.

Innovation in snowmaking has been a feature of Falls Creek's winter
seasons for at least two decades. It is continually seeking the most advanced
technology available, and with the completion of snowmaking on Australia's
longest beginner trail, the 2.2km Wombat's Ramble, the alpine
resort can proudly boast one of the most comprehensive network of snow producers in the Australian Alps.

Falls Creek is recognised as a world leader in grooming and the resort is adding to its fleet with a new Prinoth grooming machine, to provide that smooth corduroy that many people are looking for.

Falls Creek Resort Management is adding additional capacity to its track grooming capability to ensure Falls Creek retains the number one cross-country alpine resort status.

Falls Creek Alpine Resort subscribes to green energy

Drover's Dream, Falls Express and Towers Quad Chairlifts are three popular
ski lifts at the largest alpine resort in Victoria which run on renewable/green power/energy.

Fall Creek Resort Management (FCRM) is continuing to implement data received from an energy audit that was done in 2000. It has steadily reduced the amount of power used over the last eight years.

It’s eight year rolling average energy consumption has seen a 7% decrease during this period and FCRM is looking to decrease the amount of power it uses every year, while maintaining the high level of comfort and performance that people expect when they travel to Falls Creek.

Additional Activity in the resort

Work will begin on the $10 million project to fully seal the Bogong High Plains Road that will link Falls Creek (in the non winter seasons) with Gippsland this summer. It will be completed by 2009.

Funding is also being sought for an $11 million spend that will create a sports hall and pool in the resort, a 400m running track near the Nordic Bowl and a centre for rowers at Rocky Valley Dam.

Falls Creek Resort Management chief executive Ross Passalaqua said it was an unprecedented time of change.

“We have probably had 1500 to 2000 people in a village during the height of our summer season.

“Most of these developments will enhance our summer trade and in time I’d expect the resort will be full for the entire summer holidays and much busier than we are outside of that time.”

“We are already recognised as among the world’s top eight altitude training centres,” he said. “But the sealing of the road and training facilities for elite athletes will enhance that reputation.”
