Spring Snow Battle At Mt Buller (08-Sep-09)

Mt Buller, Australia, September 8, 2009 - Hundreds of snowballs will be flying

Hundreds of snowballs will be flying at Mt Buller this Saturday when the spectacle of Yukigassen gets underway as part of the spring festivities at Victoria’s most popular alpine resort.

Yukigassen originates from Japan and takes its name from two Japanese words, Yuki (snow) kassen (battle). Mt Buller hosts a popular annual Yukigassen competition and the Japanese tradition has built up a popular following with local teams lining up to do battle on the specially constructed course on Bourke Street.

Teams face off on the 40 metre long course and pelt one another with 90 regulation sized snowballs from each side in action-packed 3 minute sessions. A spectacular event for participants and spectators alike, the team that steals the other team’s flag and survives the onslaught of snowballs wins.

Mt Buller’s own Mountain Operations team were victorious last year and are ready to rigorously defend their title this weekend. Teams from local schools, visiting guests, Mt Buller businesses and even a TV crew will be competing this year.

General Manager at Buller Ski Lifts Laurie Blampied will be cheering teams on from the safety of the sidelines, “This is a terrific event and has become a popular annual celebration during the final weeks of the snow season here at Mt Buller. Everyone can get involved, and who doesn’t like a good snowball fight?”
