South American And New Zealand ski areas Suffering From Lack of Snow (26-Jun-11)

The start of the ski seasons at dozens of southern hemisphere resorts...

The start of the ski seasons at dozens of southern hemisphere resorts in Argentina, Chile and new Zealand have now been delayed by warm temperatures preventing snow making and a lack of natural snowfall.

In Argentina, the largest resort of Catedral at Baroloche, already facing problems with volcanic ash from a nearby erupting volcano, has delayed opening due to a snow shortage.

In Chile Valle Nevado has also postponed opening to the start of July, but Portillo says it will open but with severely limited terrain.

In New Zealand Treble Cone and Turoa are among the latest ski areas to announce postponed
seasons in to July, joining other ski areas that are now up to three weeks late opening.

“Despite the lack of snow, over 170 staff underwent a full season training programme last week and with all mountain and snow making staff on standby, Treble Cone is ready to open at the earliest opportunity.” said a statement from the resort.

Ironically countries in the southern hemisphere less well known for abundant snowfall have got off to a good start with their 2011 ski seasons. Perisher in Australia has had 70cm of new snow in the past few days and other Aussie resorts are opening additional terrain. Lesotho in Southern Africa opened on time but its access roads were initially closed due to 30cm of snow lying on them, but are open now.
