Snow At Sun Peaks (05-Oct-08)
Sun Peaks, BC, October 5, 2008 - The first snow of the season has been spotted on Sun Peaks
The first snow of the season has been spotted on Sun Peaks in British Columbia with three centimetres (Just over an inch) recorded at the mid-mountain weather station. The resort is now poised for winter action with several new aspects to the resort this season, including a major expansion of the Lonesome Fir Glades off the Sundance Express Chair.
In a seventy acre area, twenty lines have either been created or expanded to allow skiers and boarders of all skill levels to experience the dynamic feel of glade skiing. The new terrain means you can literally choose your grade of glade, with experts taking on the steeper, tighter lines, while intermediate and novice skiers have access to adjacent gentler pitches, some of which are now twenty feet wide.
In keeping with Sun Peak’s dedication to environmental stewardship, crews worked diligently with a forester to extract only beetle infected spruce trees to create the glades. 150 tonnes of the logged trees are being ground into shavings in the nearby city of Kamloops for use as horse bedding. Other logs will be sawn at the Chu Chua mill operated by the North Thompson Indian band, or marketed through Woodco in Barriere, b.c. for log home building, with the remainder being used for pulp.
The Lonesome Fir Glade expansion opens up a whole new area to Sun Peaks skiers and riders this year and will keep grouse and deer happy too. They frequent the area in the summer and will have more undergrowth to feed on, as it flourishes on the sun-bathed slope.
