Ski Through May In The Tirol (10-Apr-11)

If you’re looking for a snowsure destination in April and May, Tirol has five glacier ski areas...

If you’re looking for a snowsure destination in April and May, Tirol has five glacier ski areas – Stubai, Kaunertal, Rettenbach/Tiffenbach at Sölden, Hintertux and Pitztal which offer skiing into May and June.

In fact the five glaciers in Tirol offer a quarter of the northern hemisphere’s remaining summer ski options (there were more than 40 choices a decade ago).

Sölden’s Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers are connected by a 170m tunnel at a height of 3000m. Tiefenbach is best for gentle cruising and Rettenbach for more challenging skiing over 37km of pistes. One or the other is open until 8th May this year.

The Pitztal glacier is served by the highest cable car in Austria and also has a unique ‘all weather’ snowmaking system that can produce snow even in positive temperatures. This highest glacier in Austria offers 48km of pistes for all abilities as well as a cross country course, and popular snowpark. Enjoy stunning panoramas including Tirol’s highest mountain, the Wildspitze at 3774m. It is also open until 8t May this year.

The Stubai glacier also links to the Daunferner glacier offering fantastic skiing close to the city of Innsbruck. It is also Austria’s biggest glacier with 110km of slopes although not all may be open in late Spring. There’s free skiing for children under 10 years and it’s open until 22nd May this year.

The Kaunertal glacier has 54km of skiing, 50km of cross country tracks and a huge snowpark. Children under 10 again ski free and it’s a great point for ski touring from. It’s open until 12th June this Spring.

The Hintertux glacier, up to 3250m, in the Zillertal Valley offers Austria’s only year round skiing (one of only two areas in the world open year round), with 86 km of slopes.

A lift pass called the ‘White 5’ ski pass that enables skiers to ski at all five glaciers on one lift pass card is available until 15th May 2011.
