Perisher’s 27th Annual Pub-to-Pub Cross-Country Classic! (09-Sep-09)

Perisher, Australia, September 9, 2009 - Now in its 27th consecutive year

Now in its 27th consecutive year Perisher’s zaniest event the Pub-to-Pub Cross-Country Classic played backdrop to something a little different this season; a real white wedding!

The happy couple, Ian ‘Pom’ Wheeldon a local Perisher identity and his lovely Thai bride Ann, accompanied by a bridal party decked out as peacocks, chose to wed in the most unlikely of settings. On the balcony of Smiggins Hotel overlooking white capped mountains the couple tied the knot before heading off the race on the back of a skidoo.

“Pom has always been an enthusiastic supporter of the Pub-to-Pub event and thought it would be a fun and festive atmosphere for a wedding,” said Laurie Hodge, a close friend of the newly weds and Perisher’s Marketing Coordinator.

“I believe they're planning a traditional Thai wedding for later in the year. They’re also expecting their first child soon, which they are absolutely thrilled about,” continued Mrs. Hodge.

As the wedding party skidooed off in to the horizon, they were closely followed by over 500 cross-country skiing revellers; decked out in an impressive range of fancy dress attire. It was quite a sight to behold!

“It’s been the best roll up numbers wise in years and the extent of creativity shown by the fancy dress competitors was amazing,” said Neil Thew, Manager, PR & Business Development; Perisher.

There were all sorts of costumes from the wild and wacky to the truly original including peacocks, cowboys and Indians, Ken and Barbie, blue smurfs, plus plenty of tributes to the late Michael Jackson. There was also a troupe of red and white striped Where’s Wally’s who took a liking to the cameras; inconspicuously appearing in nearly ever photo taken on the day!

The journey began at Smiggins Hotel with contestants taking in five pubs in five kilometres. There was a great mix of dressed up cruisers out for a laugh and serious racers, including Ben Sim who set a cracking pace and took out the top spot for the third year in a row with an incredible time of 24:37 minutes.

Not far behind was Michelle Mc Farlane who snared the win for the girls with a time of 35:40. Alan ‘Barney’ Davis, Perisher’s Events Coordinator and Pub-to-Pub founder, put in a stellar performance picking up 5th place overall, and the top spot for the Over 50’s, with a time of 34:37.

This year’s theme was all about originality. Contestants were told to think big, think bold and let their creative juices flow. The Best Costume went to Pub-to-Pub’s first legitimate white wedding; who literally pulled out all stops to snare the prize and reportedly used his winnings to pay for the bar tab. Thanks for the beer and congrats to you both!

They were followed closely by the peacock ladies, a mob of UNO cards came in third, with Rockit’s Edibles and a contingency of yellow faced Umpalumpas also rating a mention for their creativity.
