New 89 Million Litre Snowmaking Reservoir (10-Mar-09)

NZ Ski, March 10, 2009 - A new 89 litre snowmaking reservoir

A new 89 million litre snowmaking reservoir in the Sarah Sue area at Coronet Peak will significantly improve the ski area’s ability to produce “a lot more snow”, according to Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie.

“The reservoir will improve water stocks to enable better use of the fully automated snowmaking system across the entire mountain,” he said.

“It also gives us the assurance of sufficient water capacity throughout the season.”

Construction of the reservoir is well underway and is expected to finish on 9th April when filling will start.

Mr McCrostie said they aimed to have the reservoir filled by mid May in time for Coronet Peak’s scheduled season opening on 6th June.

Last year Coronet Peak invested in a multi-million dollar fully automated snowmaking system to effectively secure the length of the snowsports season, offering more skiable terrain from season opening and vastly improving skiing and riding surfaces throughout the season.

The system is designed so that the central core of the mountain can be opened within three days of continuous snowmaking conditions. Under optimum conditions, all trails, including those on Rocky Gully, could open within 10 days.
