Griffin and Greig: New Zealand's One-Two Punch In FIS GS (13-Aug-09)

Lake Wanaka, New Zealand, August 13, 2009 - New Zealand's top Alpine Ski Racer

Lake Wanaka, New Zealand (Friday August 7, 2009)  New Zealand’s top Alpine Ski Racer, Ben Griffin has won yet another FIS race, securing gold in the Men’s FIS Giant Slalom (GS) at Treble Cone today. Mitchey Greig topped the podium in the Women’s GS.

Griffin, of Ohakune, has maintained his winning streak since Monday where he placed first in Super G, followed by gold in slalom on Tuesday.

Finishing with a combined time of 1'28.53, Griffin edged out Halfdan Alkum–Hansen of Norway (1'28.76) and Robby Kelly of the USA (1'29.05) in excellent, mostly sunny racing conditions at Treble Cone.

Former alpine ski racer turned skier cross athlete, Greig, 19, of Queenstown returned to racing for the day to win the Women’s GS with a combined time of 1'30.29.

Fellow Kiwi and member of the Ski Racing New Zealand Development Team Alexandra McGlinn, of Christchurch, took second with 1'30.82, while teammate Lucy Tait Jaimeson, of Auckland, finished third (1'32.03).

“Mitchey just nailed her second run,” said Snow Sports New Zealand Alpine Director James Lazor. “That was the difference in the race.”

Greig is a member of the New Zealand National Freeski Team, but she is an experienced racer, who was clearly in form Friday.

The Wanaka FIS Series finishes tomorrow with a slalom race at Treble Cone.
