Fresh Snow For Resorts Still Open In Northern Hemisphere (04-May-09)
SkiInfo, May 4, 2009 - More than 100 ski areas are still open for the 2008-9 season
More than 100 ski areas are still open for the 2008-9 season with resorts from The Mediterranean to the Arctic Circle and Europe and on the east and west coasts of North America still operational.
Several major resorts have received a boost with snow reporting service www.Skiinfo.com reporting more than a dozen powder alarms this week for falls of 20 – 60cm over 24-48 hour periods.
France was a major beneficiaries where still open resorts like Chamonix, Tignes, Val d’Isere and Val Thorens all reporting good new accumulations, Italy also did well and in North America resorts in Utah, California and Colorado all reported good new snowfalls.
This weekend is the last of the season for ski areas in Andorra and New England, but Sunshine and whistler in Canada and Snowbird, Mammoth, Arapahoe Basin and Squaw Valley are amonmgsat those staying open longer in to May and beyond.
In Europe Sierra Nevada, the continents most southerly ski centre, will be open for another two weeks having extended its season due to a heavy snow winter which has left it with 10 feet (3 metres) of snow still on the upper slopes.
