Free Skiing On St Joseph's Day In Switzerland (14-Mar-11)
St Josephs, Switzerland, March 14, 2011 - Forget St Patrick's day
Forget St Patrick’s Day next week, St Joseph’s Day (Josefstag), two days later on March 19th, is bigger in Switzerland and is an official holiday day in some parts of the country.
Bettmeralp (www.bettmeralp.ch) is one of the ski resorts that celebrates this by offering a free day pass on the 19th to anyone called Joseph, or indeed in the interests of sex-equality, Josephine. To qualify you need to arrive at the ticket office on the day with legitimate ID.
The St Joseph in question is the husband of Mary, mother of Jesus and was a father figure to Christ as he grew up, so it seems only right that his hard work be celebrated on Swiss ski slopes two thousand years later.
In addition families can all ski together for a total flat fee of 50 Swiss francs on the day while accompanying adults (if not a larger family) pay 20 Francs, or children 10 Francs.
