Double Average Snow Depth Now Means California’s Ski Areas Look Good For Spring (17-Jan-11)
It’s been an exceptional start to the season for California’s ski resorts...
It’s been an exceptional start to the season for California’s ski resorts, with some of them seeing 235% over average snow-depth, which, their marketing people reasonably point out, makes them an excellent choice for a spring-time ski break.
March and April see live music events, festivals, parties, competitions and usually blue skies and sunshine making a winning combination.
The mountain snowpack in the Sierras of California is currently twice the normal level for this time of year and in North Lake Tahoe they currently have a snow depth of nearly six metres (20-plus feet).
Mammoth Mountain, about three hours south of Tahoe, has experienced a similar record-breaking amount of snowfall and to date they’ve received just over eight metres (26 feet) of snow, with over five metres (17 feet) of it falling in December.
Over the coming months Tahoe and Mammoth will be hosting numerous events and below are a few highlights including the 30th Annual Snowfest in North Lake Tahoe (www.tahoesnowfestival.com) from 4 to 13 March 2011 – a 10-day extravaganza of fun, sun, snow, fireworks, parties, parades, and events.
There’s also the 7th Annual Roxy Chicken Jam at Mammoth from 23 to 26 March 2011, the
original and most prestigious stand-alone women's snowboarding event with a non-stop line up of snowboarding, music, mascots, and a free concert in The Village.
