Afriski Plans Africa's Highest Bar (13-Jul-10)

Lesotho, Africa, July 13, 2010 - Lesotho's only ski area

Lesotho’s only ski area, Afriski, is enjoying a good winter so far and has unveiled big plans for the   years ahead.

The ski centre in the land-locked but mountainous Southern African kingdom can now accommodate 250 overnight guests and also attracts day skiers  from surrounding towns, such as Clarens, about 110km away.  It receives around 12,000 skiers a season, visiting from all over the region, but the majority from Johannesburg.

Afriski has a kilometre long ski run which has full snowmaking cover if natural snow fails to arrive

This year Afriski’s main project is the building of the Gondola Café, which is Africa’s highest Apres Ski bar. The aim is to bring some of the European Apres ski traditions to the roof of Africa, to widen the centre’s appeal further beyond the downhill slopes.

Events coming this southern hemisphere winter include the Kings Cup, a Lesotho event, plus the South African National Ski and Snowboarding championships that will be held later in July/August.
