11 US Resorts to Offer Snow Sports for 4th of July Weekend (26-Jun-11)

What is believed to be a record 11 ski resorts....

What is believed to be a record 11 ski resorts in the Western USA will stay-open, or re-open for the 4th of July ‘Independence Day’ weekend in a week’s time according to www.skiinfo.co.uk

Some of the resorts have stayed open to July 4th before, but never so many at once, with so much snow remaining from last winter.

The resorts are spread across five states and benefitted from huge snowfalls throughout last winter leaving them with giant snow bases which remain several metres deep in most cases.

About half of the ski areas, including Snowbasin and Snowbird in Utah, Arapahoe Basin in Colorado and Crystal Mountain in Washington State have been open non-stop since last autumn, opening for weekend snowsports only since May or June. Two areas – Timberline in Oregon and Mammoth Mountain in California have been open every day since the start of the ski season back in 2010.

Five areas by Lake Tahoe in California – Alpine Meadows, Donner Ski Ranch, Kirkwood, Squaw Valley USA, and Sugar Bowl are re-opening for the 4th of July weekend only - although Sugar Bowl will be a staging a special ‘appreciation day’ for its season pass holders only.

North of the border, which also celebrates Canada Day on July 1st, Whistler will be open as usual along with Mount Washington on Vancouver island for the first time in its history.
