Antarctica
Ok. Let's start by stating the obvious. Antarctica's not what you'd class a typical destination for the annual family skiing holiday - unless you're the Fienneses that is.
The average summer temperature here is -30 degrees C. Double that in winter. So you'll need to pack a few extra layers. There's a particularly persistent breeze too (wind speeds of up to 320 kmph / 200mph are common) which, when combined with snow showers, tend to result in wall-to-wall white-outs.
On the bright side, the place is pretty much snow-sure. And with the highest peak at 4,897m (16,066 feet), Antartica has one of the best vertical descents of any ski resort - provided you can get to the top in the first place of course. There aren't many lifts down here.
Snowboarding in Antarctica is a pretty new thing. As far as we're aware, only two people have successfully ridden Vinson Massif. A couple more have skiied down it.
But Antarctica's not just about skiing or snowboarding. There's abundant wildlife here, dramatic scenery, towering majestic icebergs and a surreal stillness unlike anywhere on earth. Your days off mountain will be just as memorable.
Getting here
Antarctica's not particularly easy to get to. You're looking at a seven hour flight from Punta Arenas in Chile to Patriot Hills, and you'll need to charter a Twin Otter from there to the Ellsworth Mountains.
