Alsace is the thin strip of land on France's eastern border, squeezed like a head in a vice between Lorraine to the west and Germany's Rhine to the east. The Alsace Lorraine area has been the subject of more ownership disputes between France and Germany than baby Danilynne. At least if it falls back in German hands now, you won't have to change your Francs into Deutschemarks.
Running between Alsace and Lorraine are the Vosges mountains. Lower in altitude than the Alps, they're best known for their cross-country skiing. La Bresse however, is a sizeable downhill resort about an hour from Colmar, with 37 slopes and a decent terrain park.
